Basics
How do I know what reddits I moderate?
See http://www.reddit.com/reddits/mine/moderator/
Is the proper term "Reddit", "Subreddit", or "Sub-Reddit"?
Officially, the word "subreddit" is never used. Only "reddit". And the admins are actually kinda leaning towards the word "community".
But people will of course just use whichever term(s) they like.
Administration
How do I add more moderators?
Click the 'edit moderators' link in the admin box on the right.
Distinguishing
Posts that you make within your reddit will have a "distinguish" button on them. By clicking it, you can "add an [M]" to your post to mark it as official. It's purely cosmetic, and has no effect on voting, ranking, etc.
What is moderator mail?
Moderator mail is visible as the reddit alien's head and is visible on the top right corner of your Reddit window to the right of the envelope. When a user utilizes the "message the moderators" function, this is where you will be notified. You can also utilize the modmail function to hold discussions between yourself and any other moderators.
Fighting spam
What spam-prevention tools are at my disposal?
There are three main queues for you to keep an eye on:
- Your "reported links" queue shows links that users on your reddit have recently clicked the "report" button on.
- Your "spam" queue shows links that have been marked as spam, either by other moderators or by the automatic spam filter.
- Your "trials" queue shows links that have been automatically flagged for deputy moderation.
You can get to these by going to reddit.com/r/your-reddit/about/reports, reddit.com/r/your-reddit/about/spam, and reddit.com/r/your-reddit/about/trials. Or, to see all three combined into a single listing, go to reddit.com/r/your-reddit/about/modqueue.
If you moderate a lot of reddits, you should know about /r/mod, a magical shortcut that combines all the reddits you moderate into a single place. So the ultimate link to bookmark for all your moderation duties is... (drum roll please)
http://www.reddit.com/r/mod/about/modqueue
Go there as often as you can and click "remove link" next to anything that you don't want on your reddit and click "approve link" next to anything that was mistakenly flagged, reported, or sent to deputy moderation.
Why are some submissions and comments in my reddit red / yellow?
Sometimes you'll see a link or comment with a yellow "reports" badge on your reddit. That means it's been reported by one or more redditors. The total number of reports will be displayed within this badge. See the previous section for more details on reported links.
Posts and comments that have been removed (by the filter or another moderator) will be shaded in red.
Why do some removed items not specify who removed them?
These ones were automatically removed by the spam filter. You should review them, and approve them or confirm removal as needed. Each reddit has its own spam filter which learns from its moderators' actions. Over time, it should get better and better at doing your work for you -- but only if you correct it when it's wrong.
Appearance
Is there a limit to the number of CSS images I can upload?
The limit appears to be 50.
Is there a character limit on my CSS?
It appears that you will begin experiencing difficulty saving the custom CSS as you approach 100,000 total characters.
Are there any restrictions on what I can do with my reddit's CSS?
You are pretty much free to make any style modifications you would like, within reason. Some things you can't do:
- Violate the rules in the user agreement
- Disable or tamper with site functionality (e.g., buttons)
- Hide or otherwise obscure reddit ads

A user with an offensive username is posting in my reddit! What should I do?
Moderators are free to ban any offensive username they want in the reddits they mod.

Moderators are free to ban any user they want in the reddits they mod.
How do I create a FAQ for my reddit?
I'd like to moderate an inactive reddit. Who do I contact?
Head over to RedditRequest and make a post asking to take over moderating duties. If you haven't heard anything in three days, send a PM with the name of the reddit to Erik, the community manager.
What if I have a question about moderation that's not answered here?
The ModHelp reddit is ready and waiting to answer your moderator questions.
